I'm a programmer and a Lego fan.
I have created a free software to allow building Lego models using your PC.
The interface is similar to Lego Digital Designer, but functions are by far more advanced.
It supports the Ldraw standard and can load such models too.
The software is free, don't contains any AD Awares and can be downloaded from

First of all thank you for the effort you are making. The software looks really interesting.
As for the webpage, maybe you can make it a little easier to locate the steps for installation (it looks a little disorganised right now) or put them on a seperate page similar to the way it is done at LDRAW.
With regard to the program ... well maybe the first thing is related to the explanations you give. I don't like it when programs suggest doing things in locations I normally don't use without informing me hat is going o happen. I'm referring to the 'deploy' folder.
Secondly, after following all the steps to the letter, at the end of the installation I get a little screen informing me "Inifile NOT found" :confundido:
No creo que este sea el mejor sitio para este anuncio, pero tengo la misma dud cada vez que hay algo relacionado con un programa. ¿Necesitamos uns sección específica para esto? ¿Cual sería el lugar mas conveniente sino?

Running the program from the created shortcut (<start>.<program>.<sergio.reano>) instead of from c:\deploy folder should work.
Anyway, it only contains initialization default. Modifying and saving preferences will create your own one.
If it don't, let me know.

Anyway it's strange error: I cannot reproduce even in a new (clear) installation.

This was the content of my Lego3D.ini:

But even with the ini file changed the program still complains it cannot find the file.
However, when I go to C:\deploy\SR3DBuilder_0_2_2_9 and double click the SR3DBuilder.exe file it works so the problem appears to be the shortcut in the Programs tree. Unlike other entries it's a dead end: I can't see where it leads to and although it has the typical shortcut arrow it doesn't seem to be a real shortcut for anything.

Shoul dhave been more specific: what do you need volunteers to do. How do I patch part connections.
Not sure I have time, but I'm certainly interested.
I try to explain:
my prog automatically detect connections when associated to parts in lDraw\P folder.
For example when a STUD.DAT part is found, it automatically associate a stud connection in the correct position.
This works fine in 90% of cases, but when there should be a connection not associated with a part (a hinge connection is a typical example) I have to manually add it to the part defnition.
To do this in a 'easy' way i have created a built in functionality (available in the debug version of the prog) that allow users to see where identified connections are, the ability to add new conns of a specific type and to save the modification in the \lDraw\Conns folder.
After doing this it's a good practice and HIGLY RECOMENDED to test any modification in a modelAt the moment I think to have patched about half the part that need to, and a help from anybody it would be greately appreciated, expecially if the result is tested, fully functional patched part.
It takes about 10 minutes to patch and test a normal complex part.

If I ignore the error and allow the app to continue loading it shows attached image 1 in the bottom left corner and never goes past 71 (I suppose that's not what it should do)
Also I can only access the parts groups you can see in the second attached image.
If I try to load the Indicator.dat I get a fast load tim, but no image.

to solve the problem, try do the following:
- delete parts00.lst file in c:\ldraw folder: this file is used by my prog and is recretated if not found. you will experience a 20-40sec delay in starting application before loading images.
- if problem is not solved, try the following:
- note the image having the problem (in your screenshoot the appl loads up to 71 images, and the problem was on 72)
- close the application
- open the recreated parts00.lst with notepad (or whatever ascii editor)
- goto the noted line (in the example 72) and be sure it is not and empty line but is like all other lines
- if this is the case, send me the whole parts00.lst file and i'll check

Deleting the parts00.lst file caused a 2 minute delay, but resulted in the same problem reoccurring.

rename the part on line 72 (or 73) that have a long file name (long filename= more than 8 character), delete parts00.lst and restart the program.
this should solve.
Yes, each time you add new parts, you need to delete parts00.lst or use the builtin function in tools menu.

Yes, I know it takes a bit to load, but it worth the wait (IMPO) :guino: !!
to start building, just select parts by category and move them in the model space with mouse (holding LMB). Add them using <Space> or <Enter>, rotate them with keyboard arrows.
Most bricks will automatic orient according to their connections.
Have a look to help panel for a list of available commands.

Supongo que se trata de un programa de creación de LEGOs, ¿me equivoco? ¿Es el que soléis usar o preferís otros? Lo que más me fastidia de estos programas es que no están disponibles todas las piezas existentes (véase como ejemplo básico el "LEGO Designer" de la página oficial de LEGO), y en segundo lugar que no están en todos los colores :(

yo uso el conjunto de herramientas LDRaw y especifiamente el editor MLCad. De ese modo dispongo de practicamebte todas las piezas y todos los colores. Busca por "tutorial ldraw" en el foro :guino:

I'm downloading the file as I write these lines. Maybe you should include the version number in the installer file name. Also, it would be nice if you could find a way to avoid having to manually erase the Assemblies00.lst and Parts00.lst for each new install. BTW, I had no Assemblies00.lst file in the Ldraw folder but that may be due to the fact that my previous install never worked.

Installation problems:
I'm glad you have decided to make a single installation package.
There is an issue with error messages and possibilities to make changes though. On my first install of this new version I tried to simply install the single package version. When I tried to launch the application I got an error message from the program itself informing me there was an error that prevented it from starting, but no clear hint of the reason for this error. Updating my DirectX library (as recommended on the installation page) solved this issue.
After installing the DirectX updates the program starts up, asks for the location of my LDraw folder which is correctly specified and then complains that "Some files or folders are missing: please remove/rename LDraw folder and reinstall application". I believe this makes no sense. If the program has encountered a problem with the naming of this folder it should suggest a solution, not ask me to change the folder which is used by a number of other applications that could be broken by this change.
Secondly, no clear indication is given of exactly what change is necessary and no option is given to retry finding the correct folder. The program simply won't do anything until I make that change and reinstall the program.
Thirdly, other LDraw based applications allow you to make this kind of change in the options menu. That means you can access the program and correct the path to the LDraw library without having to uninstall the application.

you are right! I send a bad message advice.
The correct message should be something like the following:
"Unable to find Images folder. Choose the correct installation path or reinstall the application and let the library installation completion before closing the installation window "
In the while, please ensure you have the "Images" folder under the c:\ldraw path you choose for my application program.
If you cannot find it either you specify a different location for the part library installation or you don't allow completion of it. Note that the part library installation includes the image library used by the toolbox.
The message and the flow of the error management has been fixed and will be on next release (probably next week)

After uninstalling the application and erasing the remaining file structure windows informed me about (everything located at "C:\Program Files\SR 3D Builder\") I have reinstalled the application. When I try to run it, I get the same error again!! But it never asks me to tell it where my LDraw folder is.
Also, the application ins included under Start>Programs>SR ·D Builder, but the actual shortcut is only an Icon with no name (not serious, but definitely curious).
You probably already have a folder named c:\lDraw and choose a different folder for installing SR3DBuilder part library.
Due to an error inside my program, the application don't let you choose a different location for part library if it finds the c:\lDraw folder.
As work-around:
- temporary rename c:\ldraw to something else
- start MY application and choose the folder you have installed SR3D part library to and let the application start (it should start)
- close my application
- rename the folder to its original c:\ldraw name
- restart sr3dbuilder to ensure it is still working.
please let me know if it works
I know about missing name in the icon launching my application. It seems is due to bug in the installation packager...

Also, for those who like to print the PDF, please consider including page numbers.
If as help file you intend the help window appearing when pressing F1 key, then you can copy and paste its contents by simply pressing ALT-Stamp to copy to the clipboard and then paste it into Paint accessory of MS Windows. Then simply print the image and you are done!
If you want to show .pdf file while working, just reduce either SR3D or AcroReader window to show both application window.
The interface is not that hard to understand. You need 10 min to get a clue and a pair of hours (the time to experience the exercise in the manual) to deeply learn its functionality.

One note about image quality: I don't know why, but taking image model using internal DirectX routines result in poor image quality.
If you need better image the best practice is to take a screen shot with ALT-Stamp key combination (standard and native in any MS Windows) and then go editing them with any picture viewer/maker software. The Windows Paint is good enough to paste the screen shot and crop undesired parts.
Now, tomorrow Dec 24, will be the last day I'm online.
I will be back on Jan 7, 2010 and 'till there I will not read or answer messages or email, so be patient for any problems.
Better to save a copy of the previous version executable.

You won't believe.
Unlike any other 3D animation suites (for LEGO or for professional use) you need not to define anything!! Just position the parts in the model and the application will recognize the available animations.
Be patient for the new version! Still need some tests!!!!!

Anyway on the site there is a new version with just some small fixes to remove annoying interference between the 3arrowed axles, now called Displacement Caddy (D-Caddy) and other interface functionality.
Also added a quick color selection: read history tab on website for details and news.
If anyone has a more adequate name for that object (the 3 axle with the arrows around and the center) please let me know...

I see you are at version 0.5.5.3 now. Curious how the first yellow tube looks flat in the last part, but the tool looks amazingly easy to use.
Yes, I know there is a bug in displaying Flex when having a specific degree curves.
Anyway I actually prefer improve usability and then fix graphics since they are not limiting the application usability.

Pues yo estoy teniendo muchos problemas de estabilidad con la ultima versión(0.5.6.2), me salen errores frecuentemente y se me bloquea cada 2 por 3, cosa que con versiones anteriores no me pasaba... lo he reinstalado y me sigue pasando lo mismo, volvere a la anterior a la 0.5.6.1 hasta que salga una nueva versión...

SR 3D builder es un programa para la construcción virtual con LEGO, usando la biblioteca de elementos de LDraw y especialmente intereante para constructores Technic.
Sergio es italiano, pero suele anunciar sus actualizaciones en ingles.

SR 3D Builder made PORTABLE

here are the instructions for how to create a portable version of my application (maybe someone need it):
Things should be by far much more easy than you expect if PC you would like to run my application on already meets the requirements (MS framework 2.0 and correct DirectX version).
Following these steps should work, assuming you have a USB memory with 128MB or more free space as U: drive and you have performed a standard application installation of my SR3DBuilder:
1- Copy the contents of the c:\lDraw folder and subfolders into U:\
2- Create a folder on U to store my application system files (i.e. U:\SR3DB)
3- Copy the contents of my application installation folder (usually c:\Program Files\SR3DBuilder) in U:\SR3DB (you can avoid copying the unins*.* and fulldownload.exe files )
4- Start SR3DBuilder.exe from U:\SR3DB
5a- If prompted for choosing the part library folder, choose U:\lDraw
5b- If NOT prompted for choosing the part library folder, choose File-->Setup Directory from SR3DB menu and select U:\lDraw folder
you should be able to run the application from the USB stick now. It works at first try for me!!
Please also notice the following:
- on any computer you run SR3DB the first time or anytime your USB stick change its associated drive letter you have to repeat step 5a
- parts image loading will be tedious the first time are displayed (then will be cached)
- the extension .l3b is not associated with the application
- some registry entries are written while using the application
- maybe some other issues

Nada increible, simplemente algunos errores solucionadoes y mejoras, especialmente en la interfaz de usuario, sin videos en esta ocasión.
Es altamente recomendable que guardeis una copia de vuestro archivo ejecutable ya que se han hecho grandes cambios y pueden ocurrir errores inesperados.

- Mayor soporte para montajes: seleccionando una pieza, toda parte montada que lo rodea será seleccionada. Para seleccionar una sola pieza, mantener pulsado SHIFT (mayúsculas) durante la selección.
- Ver las uniones entre piezas para mejorar la calidad del modelo. Usa el cuadro de preferencias para cambiar el tamaño de las uniones
- Una pequeña ayuda para firmar el modelo en menú Edit
Problemas solucionados
- Algunos temas en grupos (la selección en el grupo raíz estaba causando algún tipo de mal funcionamiento)
- Deshacer/Rehacer largas operaciones ahora utiliza de forma correcta la barra indicadora de progresos (esquina inferior izquierda)
- El solucionador de hinges con conexión universal ahora funciona: incluso si has ajustado manualmente la unión al centro de rotación, la animación y conexión están garantizadas.
- Las conexiones a baseplates están mejor identificadas.
- Animar un modelo que implica rotación o traslación causa una cinta de traslación que será eliminada después de guardar la posición del modelo.
- Crear una cinta entre pins provoca que dicha cinta no se guarde correctamente.
- Mejor apoyo de los diferentes tamaños de fuente (letra) en las herramientas.
Cambiado
- Las herramientas ahora tienen la posibilidad de esconderse o cambiarse de tamaño.
- Las imágenes de las herramientas se cargan en segundo plano, no más tiempo desperdiciado.
- Un pequeño acceso de inicio rápido y carga de modelos anteriores.

One more note (I'm a little embarrassed): I really need some "money support" since the costs for maintaining my internet connection to support users is by far bigger than the offers I'm gaining.

So here I am again to announce the looooooooong awaited NEW release of my application.
There are many news, starting from the new website, now moved to

Now to the application news: there are not too many, but they are all really interesting. Here is a brief:
Added
- Support for simplified racks mechanism (where a rotation axle is coaxial to gear)
- Support for suspensions (still not the spring)
- Support for Linear Actuators
- The Animation Console that allows you to create a console with your model animations starting points and
animating it in a 'real way'
- Support for reciprocal animation referred to a block to be considered fixed
- Support for worms to rack connection
- Support for building with Linear Actuators and shock absorbers
Fixed
- Many fixes in hinge animations: now only some unusual composed hinges should not work
- Racks slidings now limits to effective rack length
- Notification at part list rebuilding end
- Pressing Cancel when closing the application and asked to save, the application closes without saving your
model
- Selecting a part involved in Connection Solver cause occasionally application crash

- You now need to press CTRL with double click to instant move your selection to a new position
A demo video will be added later in this weekend to show all new features...
But there are also some maybe bad news for someone of you: to use most of the addiction you need to get a registration code for the application with a contribution of 35€.
The ones of you already made a donation of 25€ or more, will get this code for free; other people donating a lesser amount may integrate their donations to get registered.
The amount is about what you pay for a medium or small Lego set so I hope it is not going too much for any of you :guino:

Nothing really new, just a bunch of significant fixes.

- On a fresh installation the creation of a folder with a wrong name does not let the application start
- The "pin long with friction" part has problem in rotations and animations
- Closing the application with the "X" cause the application to crash
- Editing a model with assemblies and adding new ones cause wrong assemblies identifiers
- Occasionally some subparts fails to load from a previously saved model
- Importing a model cause main model name override

- Linear actuators now move with in more natural way

- <CTRL-F> shortcut to put the cursor in the Search text box
- Location and resizing mode of the toolbox are now saved and restored on application startup

that is a known problem since I had a notebook with the same graphic adapter and with the same problem.
Updating graphic adapter driver using latest driver available on Notebook manufacture web site solved my problem but I'm not sure this works for everybody.
I can say that if you are using Windows XP, upgrading to Windows 7 usually solves the problem, but again I cannot grant for this.
Also ensure you've updated your DirectX drivers according to what specified on my application download web page.
It seems that the ATI Radeon Mobility HD 2X00 serie is a bit problematic for my program.
Sorry, but no further help available at the moment...

- When rotating the viewpoint with RMB can accidentally (but very annoying) add your selection to model

- Support for STICKERS!! ( for registered users ). Please notice that since stickers connections are added
on-the-fly to model parts, this causes the following different behaviors in the UI:
. The sticker follow mouse pointer over bricks it can connect with (and auto-orient according to part
surface slope)
. You can only use the keyboard to rotate a sticker and add it to the model (use <SPACE> or <ENTER>)
- Application now creates a backup of your model before saving it
- Latest lDraw official parts update (August 2012)

It does not contains many news, but just a few but necessaries fixes.
The only significant new is the ability for unregistered users to try the STICKER feature by adding up to 2 sticker to their models.
Loading model with more sticker will causes only first 2 sticker being displayed.

- Pin with bush was incorrectly managed causing wasting time in animation computation
- The ClearConsole button has no way to cancel the operation

- to easily connect a piston to engine cylinder do the following:
Enable Alternative UI (by pressing <U> key)
align piston to cylinder moving mouse and holding LMB pressed and then release it
correct orientation by pressing keys (you cannot click the pivot arrows while in UI) to rotate piston (don't mind if piston will move following your cursor)
hoove to the ball over the rod to connect the piston
Easyer to do than to explain. Try it!

- Importing a model with assemblies in a empty model can cause application crash
- Bad Differential animations expecially when double geared. It is important that the orbital gear is placed orthogonally to the transmission axle
- Sometimes a gear connection may interfer with a universal joint

- Fixed some particular usage of PinBushes (at the cost of a some delay in solution computational of big models)

As promised, even if a week later, here is another program update.
Before continue: if someone downloaded the program on September 2, 2013 before this announce, probably got a wrong version. If this is the case, download again from now.
Most important new is support for Mindstorm EV3 parts and a bounce of bug fixes.

Follow a list of changes:
Fixed
- Flexible parts with fixed length can freeze the application
- Hinge Solver now works with 32494.dat parts: just place on their final position and select both of them with the Hinge Solver tool
- Hinge Solver now works with Universal Joint 3L in all cases
- Mirror building now works again
- Using Half pin with stud part can occasionally lead to an error
- Some gears interferences in particular compact mechanisms

Hi everybody!
It takes forever to create my application new version, but finally here it is and, IMPO, it worths the wait.
Here is what is new: 0.9.7.3 - Changes to previous version (sorry, still not the time to create a presentation video)
Fix
- A lot of parts connection problem/missed in Technic Panels, Turntable, and other parts
- Piston Rods now should animate correctly no worry about animation starting point
Added
- The region select tool allows you to select a portion of your model enclosed into a box.
You can change your selection tool size by pressing the "S" key and moving the mouse or rotating mouse wheel
Using Shift+S you perform fine size changes
You can move the selection tool like any other part in the model to select correct parts
- The Minifig Editor is finally operative, even if it needs some work.
You can create your minifigs with few clicks and save them into a MF library
You can recall a saved MF
A unique feature allows you to save MF poses into a poses library so you can easily mix your MF library with
your saved poses (limited for unregistered users)
- Added CTRL+LeftArrow/RighArrow to easy snap move parts along axis or axis inside holes (Works with Alternate
UI only)
- Added features to allow non Lego parts to be used and animated inside SR3DBuilder (still need some work!)
Fill free to send your minifig creation and poses (really appreciated!). Will be added to the base library and distributed with next application release.
Please notice that while sending your minifigures and poses creations you implicity authorize me to distribute them as part of my application.

For the ones experiencing problems with parts, I recommend you to rebuild the partlist: due to a wrong setting this time the thing is not automated with the updated release.

Hi,
I'm back from holidays and have just published a new version of the application.
Nothing of complex this time, just a few but necessary bug fixes and the Friends figure support.

Here is a detailed list of changes
Fix
- Toolbox behavior when using scaled fonts
- Installation problems: when Part list is not found and it is not the first run of the application it crash
- Connected Selection option was no longer working correctly since last version
- Technic Axle 3L with stud now work better when the stud is inserted in a beam hole
- Trying to hinge rotate a part with sliding mobility leads to unexpected behavior
Added
- Support for Friends figure (under Figure brick type)
Changed
- Better (faster) management of UNDO especially for BIIIG models
